Their campaign cries are always about how they can do so much more for their constituents than their predecessors or their opponents. Yet, we are always being taxed & they had the nerve to say that the sales tax legislation was only something to get their minds thinking about how to deal with RI's loss of income. That proposal shouldn't have even been an option. They don't want to hear the truth - that everyone is sick of the lies most of them tell. Why don't people give their honest opinion more often when writing or calling the legislators instead of sugar coating everything? Is it because everyone is afraid our opinions will be dismissed by the legislators if we don't say something they want to hear? They work for us!!! We don't work for them! We should all actually try to work together, but that won't happen until the legislators stop giving themselves raises and job perks at the taxpayers expense.

Christina Campbell comments on Sales Tax on Real Estate Services

This is absolutely outrageous. Look at the real estate business in other countries, the commissions charged here would not be tolerated by the public. Public servants need to reminded that they are just that. There is a great deal that could be done to improve the quality of life, for example a tax on the number of plastic carry bags given out by grocery stores...one small step for mankind?

lm comments on Sales Tax on Real Estate Services

I agree w/ all these comments about wasteful spending and the need for legislators to cut spending instead of raising taxes. The problem is if we say something in a way that the legislators don't like, we get told to "be nice". Although everyone should maintain a professional attitude when dealing with others no matter what the situation, the legislators have unfortunately proven to the public that they are not very capable of using our money wisely. At this point the majority of the voters are fed up with sweet talking the legislators just so their feelings won't get hurt. I don't agree with calling anyone names, but I also feel it's about time we are all straightforward with the politicians and let them know exactly how we feel because they are not listening to the tired taxpayers who just have no more to give them as they continue to believe they can run this state on constant tax increases. Also, if they were so upset by the remarks of whoever wrote a letter saying they were "MORONS, LIARS, or THIEVES, then they've been living under a rock because they are in the public eye and that means having to develop "tougher skin". Realtors have to deal all the time with people that believe we make hundreds of thousands of dollars on commission by selling just a few houses. Either way, it shouldn't have been said, but it truly is a reflection of how fed up the public is with the lack of sense that seems to be exhibited by some legislators when they decide to just tax instead of cut - and I mean cut the waste, not valid programs that help the public.

NJC from Providence comments on Sales Tax on Real Estate Services

I think everyone is making extremely valid arguments in regards to the immense amount of wasteful spending our legislators do on a regular basis. However, the one major thing we all seem to forget is that we are the ones who continue to vote the same politicians into office year after year. Currently, the term for a State Representative is only 2 years but some of them have been in office for over 20 years why? The only way for the state to get out of bed with the unions is to elect new legislators with new ideas and a focus on reality for the state and, not the good old boy attitude which we have all come to think is normal. So really in the end, we all share a piece of the blame for the horrible state that RI is in fiscally because we continue to allow it to happen.

Jack Dwyer comments on Sales Tax on Real Estate Services

Legislators who propose these wacky ideas need to spend some time in a "Cash Spending Addiction Rehabilitation Program" paid for,of course, by the taxpayers. Additional new taxes is not the answer to the states fiscal problems because of past irresponsible spending. If the General Assembly really wants to solve THIER problem they are going to have to forget their union ties and allegiances and start making changes to the state and municipal retirement benefits program plus cutting the number of legislative employees from the existing 500 plus. Another idea would be to transfer the legislative side fund earmarked to build a new legislative office building back to the general fund.
